Dr. Ian Mugridge
Ian Mugridge holds a BA and MA in modern history from the University of Oxford and a MA and PhD in United States history from the University of California, Santa Barbara. After eleven years at Simon Fraser University, he was appointed as director of the university programme at the new Open Learning Institute of British Columbia in 1979. He remained with OLI until its merger with the Knowledge Network to form the Open Learning Agency in 1988, at which time he became vice president of OLA responsible for the Open University. He left OLA in 1996 and joined the Commonwealth of Learning as Director, Programmes, having been associated with COL since 1994 as Senior Consultant, Higher Education. He retired from COL in 1997 and has since taught in Athabasca's MDE programme as well as undertaking a number of consulting projects in open and distance education.
He has worked extensively on international projects, directing development projects in countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Jordan and India. He also served for seven years on the Planning Committee and Governing Council of the Hong Kong Open Learning Institute, now the Hong Kong Open University. He has published several books and articles on open and distance education that reflect his principal interests in planning and management, quality assurance, credit accumulation and transfer and research in open and distance education.
