Hi everyone. I am Dr. Diane Janes and I am currently an Associate Professor and Chair of the Education Department, School of Graduate and Professional Studies, Cape Breton University, Nova Scotia. From 2003 to late 2006 when my unit was closed, I was faculty with the University of Saskatchewan. In addition to teaching for AU, I also teach as a visiting professor with The University of British Columbia, Royal Roads University and the University of Calgary.
I worked with the UofS from 2003 - 2006. Originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, from 1996-2003 I was a project manager/instructional designer with the Distance Education and Technology unit, under the leadership of Director, Dr. A.W. (Tony) Bates, at the University of British Columbia (UBC). While at UBC one of my most interesting projects was as a member of the core design team for the Post-Graduate Certificate in Technology-based Distributed Learning, a series of five web-based, graduate-level distance education courses launched internationally at UBC in the fall of 1997. This Post-Graduate Certificate was revised in 2002 and has become the Masters of Educational Technology (MET) offered by the Faculty of Education at UBC.
In 2002, I became adjunct faculty with the University College of Cape Breton (now Cape Breton University) and Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Masters in Education — Instructional Technology (where I continue to teach online) and I was also made an Associate Member in the School of Nursing, UBC. In 2006 I began teaching as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the MET, with the UBC's Faculty of Education, and with Royal Roads University (2007) and I am happy to have joined the Athabasca Centre for Distance Education, as part time faculty, in 2007.
While much of my work is in online, web-based course development in the areas of Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Education, Economics, Law, Political Studies, and Physical Therapy (just to name a few), I've also consulted on distance education, instructional development and program evaluation in Canada, Mexico and New Zealand. I have a Masters degree in Educational Technology and in 2005 I completed a Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia. My research interests include faculty development, collaborative online learning, online teaching pedagogy, e-research, program evaluation, e-policy, and instructional design.
I was Book Review Editor for the Canadian Journal of Learning and Technology (formerly the Canadian Journal of Educational Communications) from 1993 to 2005 (http://www.cjlt.ca). I have served as Prairie Representative on the national board of the Canadian Association of Distance Education from 2004-2006 (http://www.cade-aced.ca/), as a reviewer and editorial board member for several international journals, and have had a number of publications and conference presentations to my credit. I just finished editing a book with Dr. Mark Bullen entitled Making the Transition to E-learning:
Strategies and Issues, Hershey, PA: Idea Publishing Group which was published in August, 2006.
