Dr. O. Bälter is an Associate Professor at the department of Media Technology and Interaction Design at KTH – Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. He teaches programming, presentation techniques and human-computer interaction. In 2009, when he was Vice Dean of Education of one of KTH:s ten schools the school was appointed Centre of Excellence in Higher Education by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education. He has also been awarded personally for his teaching skills and was elected Teacher of the Year by the students at the School of Surveying, KTH in 1987 and was Awarded KTH's price for prominent achievements in undergraduate education in 1989. In 2008 he was STINT Fellow at Williams College, Williamstown, MA, USA through the STINT Excellence in Teaching program. Current research interests are online course design, web-based data collection and technology enhanced learning.
He pioneered online programming courses in Sweden that now have 3,000 yearly students with a throughput of 70%.
His thesis on email usage attracted much attention and Bälter has been interviewed by TV, radio, newspapers and magazines more than 80 times.
