Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Distance Education Technology

Athabasca University's Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Distance Education Technology is a focused, 18-credit (six course) program designed to provide a solid grounding in the current principles and practices of technology use in distance education and training. The program structure and course content emphasize the concepts and skills required of practitioners who are employed as instructors, teachers, trainers, decision makers, planners, managers and administrators in distance education or "virtual" programs. The emphasis of the PBDDET is on the user of technology for the preparation, delivery, and management of instruction.

The PBDDET program is intended for practitioners who are seeking some flexibility in program options in addition to developing expertise in the following areas:

  • models of technology use in distance education and training settings 
  • applications of teaching and learning theory to online technology implementations 
  • current online learning theory and literature applied to distance uses of communications and delivery technologies 
  • application of program evaluation concepts in distance education 
  • implications for practice of research into online uses of technology 

The PBDDET includes three core courses and three electives for a total of 18 credits. Generally, core courses should be taken first in the program.

  • MDDE 601: Introduction to Distance Education and Training
  • MDDE 603: Foundations of Instructional Design: Systems Analysis and Learning Theory
  • MDDE 610: Survey of Current Educational Technology Applications

Electives (three required): 9 credits

  • MDDE 604: Instructional Design in Distance Education *pre-requisite: MDDE 603
  • MDDE 619: Trends and Issues in Instructional Design *pre-requisite: MDDE 604
  • MDDE 620: Technology in Distance Education and Training
  • MDDE 621: Online Teaching in Distance Education and Training
  • MDDE 622: Openness in Education
  • MDDE 623: Introduction to Mobile Learning
  • MDDE 630: Trends and Issues in K-12 Online and Blended Learning
  • MDDE 650: Tutoring and Student Support in Distance Education and Training
  • MDDE 665: Collaboration and Mentoring in Educational Environments
