Biography
Hi, I am the Program Administrator (Ed D) and Instructional Media Analyst for the Centre for Distance Education (CDE) at Athabasca University. As you can see from my list of credentials above, I have a wide range of interests. Through the years, I have been involved in teaching, instructional design, multimedia programming, content management, e-portfolios, and social software. I have designed interactive, online learning activities for various learning purposes and platforms—including print, web, and mobile devices.
My educational trajectory has been rather non-linear. I have a BA in Modern Languages and have studied French, Spanish, German, Blackfoot, Latin, Mandarin and ancient Mayan hieroglyphics. My interests in languages led me to teaching. I have taught English as a Second Language (ESL), English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and university-level writing at the University of Lethbridge, Athabasca University as well as private schools in Canada and overseas. While teaching at the University of Lethbridge, I became interested in designing online educational resources. So, I completed a college diploma in Multimedia Production in which I studied web development, audio, video, animation, 3D animation, marketing, and business. In 2006, I completed the Masters of Distance Education (MDE) through the Centre for Distance Education. My thesis is available in AU's Digital Thesis Room: Koole, M. L. (2006). THE FRAMEWORK FOR THE RATIONAL ANALYSIS OF MOBILE EDUCATION (FRAME) MODEL: AN EVALUATION OF MOBILE DEVICES FOR DISTANCE EDUCATION ©
Since completing the MDE, I have started a PhD in E-Research and Technology Enhanced learning at Lancaster University. My main area of research is how learners form identities in online, networked learning environments.
