The Athabasca River, photographed from the air near the University campus.

The town of Athabasca is located some 150 kilometres north of Edmonton, Alberta's capital city. Athabasca was originally called "Athabasca Landing," and in the days when travel by waterways was commonplace, it was an important transport hub. Between 1880 and 1914 Athabasca Landing was one of Canada's largest inland boat-building centres as scows and paddle-wheelers were made to carry goods and people northward and to bring furs back south.
